Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Mass. on July 4, 1804 to Elizabeth Manning and Capt. Nathaniel Hathorne. The family lived on Union Street in Salem until 1808, when his father died of yellow fever at sea. After his death, Nathaniel, his mother, and two sisters—Elizabeth, and Maria Louisa—moved into the Manning family home on Herbert Street. Residents in the surrounding Derby Street neighborhood were the primary beneficiaries of the settlement house.

The Colonial-style gardens were planted in 1909 during the reconstruction of the property. They feature a Jacobean Knot layout with boxwoods and heritage lilacs and geraniums. Inside the small house are portholes and telescopes, as if you were a sailor at sea.

Tours last approximately 45 minutes and take place on multiple levels in historic houses from the 1600s and 1700s. Visitors are standing, walking, or climbing stairs during these experiences. Nathaniel Hawthorne, a relative of the Ingersolls, was infamous for being reclusive during his time living in Salem, in part because Hawthorne himself exaggerated his reputation. Hawthorne was more inspired by the way "seven gables" sounded than what the house looked like. As he wrote in a letter, "The expression was new and struck me forcibly... I think I shall make something of it."[6] The idea inspired Hawthorne's novel The House of the Seven Gables. The House of the Seven Gables offers an interactive site map in Brazilian Portuguese, Cantonese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, and Spanish. By 1676, Turner had added a spacious south (front) extension with its own chimney, containing a parlor on the ground floor, with a large bed chamber above it. Ceilings in this new wing are higher than the very low ceilings in older parts of the house. The original house, which is also called the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, was built in 1668 by Sea Captain John Turner, a successful fishing and trading industry leader. Thanks to his prosperous career, Turner was able to make two major additions to his home. If you take a tour, you’ll see remnants of construction in the attic. Tickets are timed entry, so if you have a little time before your tour, take a walk around the gardens and the house. Note that the space inside the grounds makes it a little hard to get a picture of the whole house at once. Don’t worry — if you can’t climb it, there’s a regular set of stairs that will lead you to the same place in the attic. It was a really cool feature that made me feel part of a secret contained within Nathaniel Hawthorne’s mind. Proctor’s Ledge is a ways out of town, definitely out of walking distance. Tucked in a normal neighborhood is a small area where the witches were actually executed. Surrounded by the Charter Street Cemetery, the Salem Witch Trials Memorial is a stone plaza memorializing the 20 men and women who were executed as witches during the Salem Witch Trials. In contrast to the thin stone headstones of the cemetery, the memorial uses thick stone blocks that jut out from the wall, inscribed with the names of each of the victims.
There’s a red & yellow line through town, connecting the most important sites. Most have to do with the Salem Witch Trials, for which the town is famous. While The House of the Seven Gables isn’t directly connected to the witch trials, it’s true the Turners lived through that time.
